Retail company Shoprite has suspended the security personnel involved in filming and sharing a video of an elderly Eastern Cape woman after she was caught shoplifting groceries at the store.

A viral video of the incident showed the woman being searched by a security guard, who retrieved basic food items from her. The video drew widespread public backlash against the security personnel for recording the encounter and posting it online to humiliate her.

In response to concerns raised, the retailer suspended the individuals involved in filming and sharing the video online.

“We can confirm that the video was filmed and shared by a third-party service provider,” Shoprite said in a statement.

“The individuals involved have been suspended from their duties pending the outcome of an investigation and formal disciplinary process. We expect all interactions involving customers to be conducted with professionalism and respect for their dignity and privacy.”

The grocery retailer added that representatives had since visited the woman to apologise directly for how the encounter was handled.

In response to the viral video, social media content creator Mandisi Tshingana called on his 1-million followers to help locate the woman so he could provide her with a food voucher.

He launched a fundraising campaign on Thursday, and within 24 hours, donors had raised over R45,000, far surpassing the initial target of a R10,000 grocery voucher.

Tshingana explained that the funds would be used to buy food vouchers and other essential supplies for the woman, her grandchildren, and her family.

Expressing gratitude, Tshingana said he had been humbled by the overwhelming generosity and support from his community, emphasising that the gesture represented far more than just money.

“It represents food on the table. It represents dignity restored. It represents relief for a family that was struggling. It represents strangers choosing to care,” he said. “What was once a moment of embarrassment has, through the kindness of many, become a moment of hope. God turned embarrassment into restoration.”

Tshingana extended a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who contributed.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for reminding us that ubuntu is still alive. To every single person who contributed, shared her story, sent a message, offered encouragement, or simply kept uGogo in your thoughts — thank you. This would not have been possible without you. You reminded us that sometimes people do not need our judgement, they need our humanity.”
