Sàd News Hits Ghanaians As Accidents Reportedly Claimed Over 2,000 Lives

According to a report by Adom FM today being Thursday, October 8, 2026, road crashes recorded across Ghana between January and September have claimed the lives of 2,151 people, according to data from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The figures, which cover the first nine months of the year, highlight the continuing road safety challenges facing the country and the devastating consequences of road crashes on families and communities.

The MTTD also recorded thousands of road crashes during the period, with many of the incidents resulting in fatalities, injuries and significant damage to vehicles and property.

The latest statistics have renewed calls for motorists and other road users to take greater responsibility when using the country’s roads. Drivers have been urged to observe speed limits, avoid reckless overtaking and remain attentive at all times while behind the wheel.

Speeding, dangerous driving, poor vehicle maintenance and other forms of road indiscipline are among the factors commonly associated with road crashes. Authorities and road safety stakeholders have therefore continued to encourage motorists to adopt safer driving practices.

The impact of the fatalities extends beyond those directly involved in the crashes. Families can lose breadwinners, children can lose parents and communities can be left to deal with emotional and financial difficulties following fatal accidents.

The figures have consequently strengthened calls for increased enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road infrastructure and continuous education for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

Transport operators have also been encouraged to ensure that vehicles are properly maintained and that drivers are physically and mentally fit before embarking on journeys.

Meanwhile, pedestrians and passengers have been advised to exercise caution and comply with road safety measures when travelling.

The MTTD’s latest statistics serve as another reminder of the urgent need to reduce preventable deaths on Ghana’s roads.

With 2,151 lives reportedly lost within just nine months, stakeholders are expected to intensify efforts to promote responsible driving, strengthen enforcement and improve road safety awareness across the country.
