RIP: Sad News as Prominent Government Officer and His Driver Are Killed in Morning Attack

A senior police officer and his driver have been killed after their vehicle hit an explosive device along a road in Garissa County, near the Dadaab refugee complex.

The tragic incident happened on Friday morning, October 9, 2026, as the two travelled along the Saretho to Dadaab road. The officer was in charge of the Hagadera Police Division and held the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

According to a security report, both men died instantly when the explosion ripped through their Toyota Land Cruiser, which belonged to Hagadera Police Station. The powerful blast left the vehicle badly damaged.

The explosion occurred at around 6.50am along a key road used by security officers and vehicles transporting supplies to the Hagadera and Dadaab areas.

Security agencies suspect that Al Shabaab militants were responsible for the deadly incident, although the group had not publicly claimed responsibility by the time of publication.

Garissa County has experienced repeated security incidents because it lies close to the Kenya-Somalia border.

Al Shabaab has previously targeted police officers, military personnel and vehicles travelling through the region.Although the militant group operates mainly in Somalia, it has carried out numerous attacks inside Kenya, particularly in areas near the border. The latest explosion has raised fresh concerns about the safety of security personnel and other road users in northeastern Kenya.

Following the incident, security officers launched an operation to examine the scene, investigate the attack and establish whether other threats remained in the area.

Authorities warned that further attacks could occur along the affected road. They raised concerns about additional explosives and possible ambushes targeting officers responding to the incident.

Motorists and members of the public were advised to avoid unnecessary journeys along the Saretho to Dadaab and Garissa to Dadaab routes until security teams completed inspections and confirmed that the roads were safe. Residents were also cautioned against approaching the explosion site as investigations continued.

Organisations working in Hagadera and Dadaab were urged to confirm the safety of their employees, while vehicles carrying essential supplies were instructed to follow security guidelines before travelling.

Security measures have been reinforced around Hagadera Police Station and roads leading to the Dadaab refugee complex as authorities work to prevent further attacks and protect residents and security personnel.
