The government announced the financial package as preparations to lay the victims to rest continued. Officials also promised to set up a special assistance fund to provide further help to families affected by the tragedy.

The announcement came during a memorial service held at St Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Mombasa. Relatives, friends and Catholic worshippers attended the gathering to honour those who lost their lives.

The service gave families an opportunity to come together and remember the pilgrims before their burial.Archbishop Dominic Kimengich described the deaths as a painful setback for the Catholic community. He noted that the pilgrims had embarked on a religious trip to Subukia, with their loved ones expecting them to return safely.

Religious leaders encouraged relatives to remain united and support one another as they faced the difficult days ahead.

The crash also renewed concerns about safety on the country’s busy roads. Leaders urged motorists to remain alert, particularly drivers of heavy trucks carrying sand, ballast and other construction materials.

They further called on authorities to consider alternative routes for heavy commercial vehicles in an effort to reduce danger to other road users.
