Parents urged to keep children away from waterlogged, low-lying areas

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued on Friday a rain alert across Punjab, forecasting rain in most districts from Saturday until October 14, with strong winds expected in several areas.

According to the PDMA spokesperson, a western weather system is expected to enter the country’s upper regions on Saturday.

The PDMA said that rain is forecast in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat and Gujranwala.

Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal and Mianwali are likely to receive rain accompanied by strong winds. Intermittent rain is also expected in Faisalabad, Khushab, Bhakkar, Sargodha, Jhang and Toba Tek Singh.

The PDMA has warned of possible landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas. It has directed commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province to remain on alert.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Khatia said district administrations had been alerted on the instructions of the Punjab chief minister. The health, irrigation, communications and works, local government, and livestock departments had also been placed on alert.

Residents have been advised to take precautions during bad weather and avoid staying in dilapidated or mud-built houses.

During storms and strong winds, people should seek shelter in safe places and avoid unnecessary travel. Residents have also been warned to stay indoors or in safe locations during thunderstorms and lightning.

The parents have been urged to keep children away from waterlogged and low-lying areas, as well as electricity wires and poles. People should not venture into open areas during thunderstorms or severe weather.

The PDMA has advised the public to contact its helpline on 1129 in an emergency.
