Oburu Oginga Death Rumours Spark Confusion as ODM Governor Gives Update
Rumours about the death of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga have circulated on social media, prompting concern and confusion among Kenyans. However, available reports and statements from political leaders indicate that the veteran politician is alive and recovering while receiving medical attention in Nairobi.
The speculation gained attention after a post on X claimed that “OBURU ODINGA YOUTH LEADER IS DEAD!” The statement quickly attracted attention online, despite the absence of credible evidence confirming the senator’s alleged death.
Recent comments from leaders within the ODM party have contradicted the circulating claims. According to The Star, ODM communications director Philip Etale said on October 6 that Oburu was doing well after visiting Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also addressed the growing speculation, providing an update on the senator’s health after visiting him.
In a message shared on Tuesday evening, Wanga stated: “My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery.” Her statement offered reassurance to supporters and directly challenged the unverified reports suggesting that the veteran politician had died. It also indicated that he remained under medical care and was making progress towards recovery.
The latest developments follow earlier reports published by The Star on October 5, which stated that Oburu had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital for treatment related to a chronic illness. Capital FM subsequently reported on October 6 that the senator was under observation and showing signs of improvement following a medical issue involving his blood pressure. These reports appear to have contributed to renewed public interest in his health, creating an environment in which unverified claims could spread rapidly.
Similar rumours have emerged before. In September, fact-checking organisation Africa Check investigated claims that Oburu had died and established that the reports were false. The organisation reported that he was alive and had travelled to the United Kingdom for a medical examination. Oburu had previously explained that his trip to the UK was intended for a routine health assessment and rest, following medical advice.
For now, no credible information provided in the reports confirms his death. Kenyans are encouraged to verify sensitive information before sharing it online and to rely on statements from family members, party officials and reputable news organisations for further updates on his condition.
