Naqvi tells Guterres 25 militant groups operating in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD  –  Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday said Pakistan was fighting the global war against terrorism while continuing to face serious security challenges. He made these remarks during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Ministry of Interior. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry was also present. The meeting discussed the global and regional situation as well as matters relating to UN peacekeeping missions. “Currently, 25 terrorist organisations are operating in Afghanistan, posing a major threat to peace in the world,” Naqvi said, according to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry.

He stressed the need for the international community to work collectively to address the threat. Naqvi said Pakistan would continue to play its full role in UN peacekeeping missions. He added that Pakistani police officers and personnel were also serving in UN Police missions. “Pakistan has sacrificed 181 lives in UN peacekeeping missions,” he said. Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s prominent participation in UN peacekeeping operations and appreciated its contribution to maintaining global peace. “The role played by Pakistan in maintaining world peace is commendable,” he said. Naqvi thanked the UN secretary-general for the organisation’s extensive assistance to Pakistan during natural disasters. The special secretary interior, additional secretary interior and other senior officials were also present during the meeting.
