Mahama Has a Message for Ghana’s Road Contractors
President John Dramani Mahama has commended Kofi Job and other prominent Ghanaian contractors for their contributions to the country’s road construction sector, while assuring them of continued opportunities to participate in major infrastructure projects.
Mahama acknowledged the role local contractors play in developing Ghana’s road network, recognising their contribution to the construction and improvement of roads across the country.
The President also disclosed that Ghanaian contractors receive approximately 90 per cent of road projects, while foreign contractors account for the remaining 10 per cent.
The figures highlight the government’s stated emphasis on involving local companies in the delivery of road infrastructure, giving Ghanaian businesses opportunities to undertake projects and contribute to the country’s development.
For contractors such as Kofi Job, the assurance of further opportunities could be significant, particularly as road construction remains an important part of Ghana’s infrastructure development agenda.
Local contractors also play a role in supporting employment, creating opportunities for suppliers and workers, and keeping more economic activity within the country. Their participation in public infrastructure projects can help build local expertise and strengthen the construction industry.
However, the success of such projects also depends on factors including timely payments, adequate financing, quality standards and the ability of contractors to complete work within agreed timelines.
Mahama’s comments signal the government’s intention to continue engaging Ghanaian contractors in road construction while maintaining a role for foreign companies in the sector.
The 90 per cent allocation cited by the President also raises questions about how projects are distributed among local firms and the measures used to ensure transparency, value for money and quality delivery.
As Ghana continues to pursue improvements to its road network, the President’s assurance will be of interest to contractors seeking new projects and communities hoping for better road infrastructure.
The key issue going forward will be how the promised opportunities translate into completed projects that meet the needs of road users across the country.
