Legendary Generations, Uzalo and Sarafina! actor Mfana Jones Hlophe has died

The South African arts community is mourning the passing of actor, singer and creative Mfana Jones Hlophe, with tributes highlighting his contribution to the industry and the influence he had on fellow performers.

A tribute shared by Enjay Productions honoured Hlophe’s life and legacy, describing him as a talented actor, a powerful voice, a loving partner and an inspiration whose work will continue to live on through the stories told by those he leaves behind.

One tribute from a fellow thespian Zola Hashatsi captured the profound impact Hlophe had on younger performers and colleagues in the industry.

ā€œIt’s with a heavy heart to announce the passing of fellow thespian Mfana Jones Hlophe. He practically raised us,ā€ the tribute read.

The message went on to thank Hlophe for his contribution to the arts, acknowledging the value of his work and the appreciation felt by those who had the opportunity to learn from him and share the industry with him.

ā€œThank you for your contribution to the arts. I’m thankful and appreciate your work,ā€ the tribute continued.

The words reflect the role experienced performers can play in shaping the next generation of artists, not only through their performances but also through their guidance, support and presence within the industry.

Enjay Productions described Hlophe as an actor, singer and visionary, paying tribute to his passion for the arts and the people around him.

ā€œYour passion for the arts and the people around you will always live on through the work we continue to do,ā€ the production company stated in the tribute.

A career shaped by theatre and television

Born in Durban and raised in uMlazi, Hlophe built a career spanning theatre, television, music and dance. His professional journey began in the late 1980s when he joined the production Township Fever under the mentorship of the late Mbongeni Ngema. He later became associated with Sarafina!, including its international touring production and 1992 film adaptation.

His theatre work includes Ipi Ntombi, Gumboots and Woza Albert!. On television, he was known for playing Jabu in Soul City between 2006 and 2008, while his screen work also included Zone 14

In 2023, Hlophe said he was returning his focus to theatre after the Covid-19 lockdown prompted him to pursue independent creative work and write his own plays. Through Enjay Productions, he also sought to introduce young people from uMlazi to acting for television and theatre.

His career reflected a commitment to developing his own work while creating opportunities for emerging performers – a contribution that gives added meaning to the tribute from a fellow thespian who said he ā€œpractically raised us.ā€
