The 53-year-old Umlazi-born star, who played the problematic Nimrod on SABC1’s Generations: The Legacy, passed away on Wednesday night at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Joburg after a long battle with Type 1 diabetes.
His brother, Bonani Mambi, confirmed the heartbreaking news to Daily Sun.
“He passed away on Wednesday night around 8:30pm to 8:45pm. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. We’re not sure if he died on the way to hospital or upon arrival,” he said.
Bonani said Mfana-Jones had been living with diabetes for a long time and family members were helping him manage the condition, including reminding him to eat on time.

“He had Type 1 diabetes. Sometimes he had episodes where he didn’t realise he hadn’t eaten, and the problems would start when he was unable to move his body. If someone was around, they would help him with his medication.
“On Wednesday, he was alone at his house. When his partner came back from work, she found him in a bad condition. She rushed to buy a Coke, thinking it would help normalise his sugar levels, but it didn’t help. They then requested an e-hailing service to rush them to hospital, but he may have passed away on the way or on arrival.”
Bonani said the family is devastated by the unexpected loss.
Mfana-Jones made his name in some of Mzansi’s biggest productions, including Sarafina, Uzalo, and Imbewu: The Seed.
Although he had a home in Joburg, he’ll be laid to rest in Durban, KZN on Saturday, 17 May, where his family is based.
“His parents were laid to rest in Durban, and he should be buried next to them.
“There will also be a memorial service in Joburg because the creative industry asked permission to have one there, and we granted it. We’re still finalising the date for the memorial service,” Bongani added.
