Jerry Jones Can’t Ignore It: Cowboys Made Mistake Moving On From Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys and their fans are quickly learning the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Mike McCarthy was the head coach of the Cowboys from 2020-2024, owning a 49-35 record during that stretch. The biggest knock on McCarthy was that his teams in Dallas went 1-3 in the playoffs. Obviously, that’s not going to cut it for Jerry Jones.
Well, the Cowboys might not even sniff the playoffs with McCarthy’s replacement.
Brian Schottenheimer went 7-9-1 during his first season as the head coach of the Cowboys. While it’s possible “America’s Team” makes a playoff run this year, a 2-3 start isn’t what the Jones family envisioned.
And even though Schottenheimer has been a successful play-caller for the Cowboys, his latest loss might put him on the hot seat. According to ESPN, Thursday night’s loss to the Buccaneers marks the fourth time in the Super Bowl era that Dallas lost to a team that was 0-4 or worse.
One of the biggest issues for the Cowboys is their defense can’t make a stop when it truly matters.
On Thursday night, the Cowboys gave up a season-high 419 yards to the Buccaneers. They’ve allowed at least 375 yards in all five games this season under defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
We’re not sure if Jones is regretting his decision to move on from McCarthy, but the Cowboys media members and fans are willing to have that conversation.
“No one will ever give Mike McCarthy credit for the run he had with the Cowboys. It is a shame,” RJ Ochoa of Blogging The Boys said. “3 straight 12-5 seasons, first road playoff win since the 92 NFC Championship Game. He failed regarding what he was hired to do. But people act like he was this imbecile. It’s weird.”
“Cowboys organization really thought bringing in a Schottenheimer would make things better,” a fan wrote on X.
“Big Mike 12-5 seasons don’t look so bad right about now…” a Cowboys fan said.
“Can’t believe I’m saying this but Mike McCarthy was the last good coach the Cowboys have had in the last 20 years,” another fan commented.
If Schottenheimer fails to make the playoffs this year, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cowboys make a coaching change.
