A pair of adopted Montana teenagers discovered they were long-lost sisters in the most unbelievable way… after facing off on rival softball teams.
Samantha Rensvold, 19, was playing in a tournament on August 1 when her teammate noticed a striking resemblance between her friend and Kyann Dean, 18, on the opposing squad.
Rensvold knew that she had a younger biological sister but did not know her identity, as their adoptions were kept private, telling People that she was ‘pretty much in denial’ and thought: ‘There’s no way that this would happen to me right now.’
Incredible: These adopted Montana teenagers (left to right), Kyann Dean, 18, and Samantha Rensvold, 19, discovered they were long-lost sisters after meeting on opposing softball teams
She initially chose not to approach Kyann despite also noticing a resemblance because she didn’t want to be wrong about the pair being sisters.
But after she went home and told her mom about the situation, they decided to look into the tournament roster.
They found out the similar-looking girl was named Kyann, and Rensvold’s mom knew that was the name given at birth to the teen’s biological sister.
Samantha said: ‘So my mom was like, “That has to be your sister. That’s not a coincidence.”‘
Two peas in a pod: Rensvold (pictured) said her teammate told her that she bore a striking resemblance to a girl on the opposite team during a game on August 1
Similarities: At the next game Kyann (left) and Samantha went to, their families talked and confirmed that the teens’ birth mom had the same name and that they were born at the same hospital
At the next softball game the sisters attended, their families began talking and confirmed that their biological mom shared the same name and that they were born at the same hospital.
Samantha told the outlet: ‘There was no way we weren’t [sisters]’
The families arranged for the sisters to meet, and the moment was captured in a video obtained by Inside Edition.
The video begins with Rensvold’s teammate telling Kyann, ‘There’s a girl on my all-state team who looks just like you!’
The smiling sisters then exchanged an awkward handshake while their families laughed and exclaimed their joy. ‘We were just freaking out. We were just in tears, and it’s like, “Oh my gosh!”‘ Samantha’s mom told Inside Edition.
Despite the sisters’ somewhat uncomfortable initial meeting, their relationship quickly warmed as they got to know each other.
Samantha told People that despite growing up 400 miles away from each other, she and her sister both played high school volleyball in the same position. In another striking coincidence, they were both players number six on their respective teams.
Rensvold also said that she and her sister have the same ‘little giggle.’

The 19-year-old said that at the time of her birth, her biological mother was also 19 and her father was 17.
She said she assumes the reason her biological parents gave her up for adoption was that they ‘were too young and they wanted to give me a better life that maybe they couldn’t give me.’
Rensvold explained that she found out she had a sister from another biological sibling, a younger brother, who had tracked her down after he learned he had siblings.
‘What I don’t know is why they had two more [children] and then gave them both up for adoption,’ Rensvold said in regard to her biological parents.
At the moment, Dean attends college in North Dakota and Rensvold attends college in Washington State, so the sisters have not been able to see each other much in person, but they have been keeping in touch and hope to get together soon.
Rensvold said that meeting Dean and finally putting a face to the long-lost sister she knew she had has left her without ‘any doubt or wonder in my mind.’
