I’ll Remove Otumfuo’s Name from the Constitution” — Dormaahene Renews Challenge Over Bono History
The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr Agyemang Badu II, has reportedly renewed his criticism of the constitutional and legislative recognition associated with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, linking his position to concerns about the historical recognition of the Bono people.
In an interview reportedly aired on Royal TV, the traditional ruler said he intended to pursue lawful measures to have the Asantehene’s name removed from the relevant constitutional provisions. He reportedly connected the proposed action to what he considers inadequate recognition of Bono history, heritage and contributions to Ghana’s development.
The Dormaahene’s comments reflect a longstanding disagreement over traditional authority, historical narratives and the extent to which particular chieftaincy institutions should be recognised in national laws.
In December 2023, he questioned the use of the title “king” within Ghana’s constitutional framework and argued that references to the Asantehene in the Chieftaincy Act should be reconsidered. He suggested that if one traditional ruler received specific recognition in the legislation, other prominent traditional authorities should also be considered.
The disagreement has formed part of wider debates involving the historical relationship between Asante and Bono traditional institutions, including disputes over the authority to elevate chiefs and the recognition of traditional stools.
The Dormaahene has reportedly presented his position as an effort to protect Bono identity and ensure that the community’s historical contributions receive appropriate recognition, rather than as a personal dispute with Otumfuo.
Any attempt to amend constitutional provisions or legislation, however, would have to follow the applicable legal procedures. A public declaration alone cannot alter the Constitution or remove a reference from an existing law.
The latest reported remarks could therefore reopen discussion about traditional authority and historical representation, although the specific Royal TV interview and its full context require independent confirmation.
