Gov’t has not banned preaching in vehicles, only in moving ones – President Mahama
Share on Twitter President John Dramani Mahama has addressed public concerns over Regulation 141 of the new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519).
According to him, government has not banned preaching and trading in public and commercial vehicles outright as is being speculated.
President Mahama explained that the law only applies when a vehicle is in motion. Preaching and hawking are permitted when the vehicle is stationary.
He said the measure is intended to prevent driver distraction and protect passengers, traders and preachers.
“It has come to my attention that there is a perception that we have banned preaching in vehicles. What we are saying is that no one should preach or sell in a moving vehicle. Regardless of your faith, you cannot preach in a moving vehicle, but you can preach when the vehicle is stationed. It is not true that we have banned preaching in vehicles,” he said.
The regulation makes it an offence to preach or hawk in a public or commercial vehicle while it is in motion. Offenders are liable to a fine of 10 to 50 penalty units, up to eight months imprisonment, or both.
The provision has sparked debate, with some religious leaders expressing concerns about its effect on evangelism.
Government has, however, suspended enforcement of the provision pending further stakeholder consultations.
