Good News for Police Officers as Salary Increment Is Announced

Police officers in Kenya are set to benefit from higher basic salaries following the implementation of the final phase of a three-year pay review in July 2026.

The adjustment covers all 10 police pay grades, from constables to assistant inspector generals. Officers serving in the Kenya Prisons Service are also covered under the revised salary structure.

The review follows recommendations by the David Maraga-led Taskforce on Police and Prisons Reforms, established by President William Ruto in December 2022. The taskforce identified low salaries, poor housing, delayed promotions and inadequate welfare support among the challenges affecting officers.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government had fulfilled its commitment to implement the final phase within the current financial year. The review was introduced in stages over three years to spread the cost of the salary adjustments.

Under the announced rates, police constables in pay grade one now earn a minimum basic salary of KSh 29,360, up from KSh 27,470. Corporals in grade two receive KSh 35,580, compared with their previous minimum of KSh 33,690.

Sergeants in grade three now earn KSh 46,380, up from KSh 44,595. Inspectors receive KSh 55,075, while superintendents earn KSh 76,565 under the revised structure.

Assistant inspector generals in grade 10 now start at KSh 98,715, compared with the previous minimum of KSh 96,930. The maximum basic salary for the highest-ranking serving officer has also increased from KSh 289,090 to KSh 345,850.

Senior officers in the Prisons Service are expected to earn between KSh 301,548 and KSh 584,903, according to the supplied figures. Officers also retain applicable allowances approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, including housing and commuter benefits.

For example, a constable serving in Nairobi may receive a monthly housing allowance of KSh 9,500 and a commuter allowance of KSh 3,000. The final amount received will depend on an officer’s grade, applicable allowances and other payroll provisions.
