Ghana Plastic Recyclers Appeal for Government Support to Build Industrial Hub

The Ghana Plastic Recyclers Association is calling on the government to establish a dedicated industrial hub to address infrastructure challenges facing recycling businesses and strengthen the country’s response to plastic pollution.

The Association believes the proposed facility would give operators access to suitable working spaces, improve their productivity, create employment opportunities and support the sustainable management of plastic waste.

Its Secretary, Ibrahim Alico, has urged authorities to make the project a priority, arguing that the lack of permanent locations and essential facilities continues to restrict the growth of the recycling industry.

He noted that a purpose-built industrial centre would enable businesses to collect, sort and process discarded plastics more effectively, increasing the volume of materials recovered for reuse.

Ghana continues to face difficulties managing plastic waste, particularly from sachet water packaging, beverage bottles and food containers. Significant quantities of these materials are discarded in drains, waterways, open spaces and landfills.

The accumulation of plastic waste contributes to environmental pollution and can obstruct drainage systems, increasing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. Improper disposal methods, including open burning, also pose risks to public health and the environment.

Recycling companies and members of the National Artisans and Traders Union of Ghana are seeking to address these challenges by recovering discarded plastics and converting them into reusable products.

However, industry representatives say their efforts remain constrained by inadequate operational facilities and limited access to suitable industrial locations.

The President of the National Artisans and Traders Union of Ghana, Alhaji Sulemana, has similarly appealed for government intervention to facilitate the establishment of the proposed recycling hub.

He believes improved infrastructure would allow operators to expand their businesses, increase recycling capacity and contribute more effectively to national development.

The Association argues that investment in a dedicated industrial zone could also strengthen the plastic recycling value chain by improving the collection, processing and reuse of waste materials.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the initiative could generate jobs, particularly for young people, while creating better conditions for businesses operating within the sector.

The recyclers are therefore urging the government to consider the proposal as part of its broader efforts to improve waste management, protect the environment and promote economic opportunities through sustainable industrial activities.
