Chris and Flo head to Oxford to help Cat and Nic transform their long, featureless garden into a Brighton-inspired family retreat. At the moment, their wide stretch of grass feels empty and uninspired, with a lone shed and tortoise enclosure at the far end. Their small patio is cramped, the seating is broken, and despite being a sociable family, they’re unable to truly enjoy their outdoor space.
Cat and Nic’s dream is to create a garden that blends relaxation, fun and learning – a retreat for the whole family. They’d love a decked area with twinkling lights for cosy evening drinks, a water feature crafted from materials salvaged from Brighton Pier to honour Nic’s love of the sea, a playful area for their toddler and a secure space for their tortoise. Despite their busy lives, they’re eager to nurture and enjoy a garden that encourages both relaxation and discovery.
Cat and Nic’s story began at Essex University. In just a few years, their family grew, and they welcomed their son, Jonathan, along with a lively collection of beloved pets. Since moving into their Oxford home in 2023, they’ve cherished the space it provides for their growing family. Their dog, Betty, loves the garden, and their tortoise, when not hibernating, would thrive with a safe space to explore. Having lived in Brighton for 15 years, Nic misses the seaside and dreams of a design that brings the coast to her doorstep.
Can Chris and Flo transform this empty stretch of grass on a £6,000 budget?
