Gachagua’s Radical Plan Emerges as Opposition Leaders Struggle to Agree on Ruto’s Challenger

The opposition’s plan to unite and defeat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election is facing fresh challenges, with mistrust among its leaders and fears of State interference threatening to weaken the coalition.

The divisions became clear after a high profile strategic retreat at Windsor ended prematurely before the leaders could address key questions about their political future.

The meeting exposed differences among the principals, raising concerns about whether they can agree on a common presidential candidate.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), is seeking to protect his political influence in the Mt Kenya region.

His camp is reportedly reluctant to fold its political base into Kalonzo Musyoka’s Ukambani Alliance.

Kalonzo, who leads the Wiper party, is said to favour direct negotiations among opposition principals instead of relying on opinion polls to determine who should lead the coalition.

The disagreement over how to select a presidential candidate has become one of the biggest obstacles to unity.

Several opposition leaders have presidential ambitions, with each believing they have what it takes to challenge Ruto.

Gachagua has maintained that the opposition should delay naming its presidential candidate until late in the election period.

His argument is that announcing the candidate too early could give State intelligence agencies time to study the individual, target them politically or attempt to influence their campaign.

Meanwhile, Gachagua’s camp has reportedly floated an alternative arrangement in which Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna would become the presidential candidate, with Kalonzo serving as his running mate.

Sifuna has strengthened his political position through The Equitable Party (TEP) and his Linda Mwananchi Movement, giving him a political platform outside the traditional opposition parties.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is also among the key figures associated with the opposition’s efforts to build a united front against the government.

However, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro’s political moves have introduced another source of suspicion.

Nyoro recently broke away from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to establish the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK).

Despite his departure from UDA, whispers within Gachagua’s camp suggest that Nyoro could be a State project intended to divide the Mt Kenya voting bloc.

These claims remain suspicions and have not been established as facts.

The opposition leaders are also said to be operating in what political observers describe as a ‘just in case’ mode.

Rather than fully committing to one political vehicle, some are keeping their options open to protect their individual ambitions should the coalition fail.

Gatanga MP Edward Muriu has been attempting to mediate among the leaders as they struggle to overcome their differences.

Moi University don and political analyst Dr Masibo Lumala has warned that the opposition’s fragmented structure could make it easier for the government to interfere with its plans.

Advocate and political analyst Dr Martin Oloo has also warned that the State could take advantage of disagreements among opposition leaders and use the deadlocks to weaken their unity.
