As France entered total war, it turned to its colonies to recruit workers and soldiers. Morocco, a French protectorate since 1912, provided nearly 85,000 men who were sent to the trenches and war factories. Among them were workers as young as 13. This massive recruitment drive across the colonial empire sparked waves of protest.
