“Don’t Tape or Glue Torn Cedi Notes Again” – Bank of Ghana Issues Strong Warning to Ghanaians
The Bank of Ghana has warned the public against tampering with damaged Ghana Cedi banknotes or attempting to repair them improperly. The caution was contained in a press release issued by the central bank on October 7, 2026.
The Bank of Ghana said it had taken notice of a video circulating on social media showing individuals using adhesive tape to repair torn and soiled banknotes before putting them back into circulation as part of a business activity.
The central bank described the practice as unacceptable, stressing that the Ghana Cedi is legal tender and represents an important national symbol. It warned that members of the public must not tape, glue, staple, rejoin or otherwise alter damaged notes for the purpose of recirculating them.
According to the bank, improperly repaired currency can compromise the integrity of the notes and create difficulties within the country’s cash-handling system. Banknotes that have been glued, stapled or taped may also be unsuitable for use in ATMs and other currency-processing equipment.
The Bank of Ghana further cautioned that such notes could be rejected when members of the public attempt to use or exchange them, potentially resulting in financial losses.
The central bank reminded citizens that it has the exclusive responsibility for managing Ghana’s currency. Individuals who possess damaged or mutilated notes were advised to take them to a commercial bank for assessment and possible replacement in accordance with established procedures.
The Bank of Ghana noted that anyone presenting a mutilated banknote for examination must provide more than half of the original note.
The public was therefore advised not to attempt repairs themselves. Instead, damaged notes should be submitted to commercial banks for proper assessment and replacement.
The central bank also urged Ghanaians to handle banknotes carefully and report individuals involved in the improper repair or mutilation of currency to the Bank of Ghana or the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
It concluded by reminding citizens that protecting the condition of the Cedi is a shared responsibility and a reflection of national pride.
