Cement Prices in Ghana Take Another Turn as CIMAF Cuts Rates—But Will Buyers Benefit?

Conflicting reports about cement and kenkey prices in Ghana have renewed public debate over whether consumers are benefiting from changes in market conditions, with recent developments showing that prices vary across products and outlets.

Claims that GHACEM had reduced its 42.5-grade cement from GH¢120 to GH¢82 circulated widely online. However, those figures were previously investigated by GhanaFact in May 2025, which found no evidence that the widely advertised reduction had taken effect at the retailers it contacted.

The cement market has since experienced further changes. In September 2026, the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers introduced a temporary GH¢12-per-bag surcharge to help manufacturers cover additional costs caused by severe congestion at Tema Port. Retailers subsequently reported higher prices and weaker demand.

More recently, an October 2 report indicated that CIMAF had reduced prices for some products. The reported prices included GH¢72 for a 50-kilogram bag of CIMAF Foreman cement, GH¢74 for its 32.5 grade and GH¢98 for its 42.5R grade. These figures should not be treated as uniform prices nationwide, as transport costs, dealer margins and local market conditions can affect what consumers pay.

The debate has also extended to claims that kenkey prices had fallen from GH¢5 to GH¢3. However, the material reviewed does not establish that this reduction has been implemented generally, and prices may differ between vendors and locations.

The conflicting claims highlight the importance of checking the dates, grades and locations attached to reported prices before sharing them as current market facts.

For consumers, the practical approach is to confirm prices directly with retailers and vendors. For policymakers and industry stakeholders, transparent pricing information would help reduce confusion and enable buyers to assess whether changes in production and distribution costs are reaching the market.
