Former Cabinet Minister and veteran diplomat Burudi Nabwera has died at the age of 99, bringing to an end a long career in diplomacy, government service and elective politics.

Source: FacebookPrime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi led tributes to the veteran leader, describing him as a distinguished statesman whose service helped shape Kenya’s diplomatic relations in the early years after independence.
He described Nabwera as one of the pioneers who helped establish Kenya’s voice on the international stage, adding that his contribution to the country’s diplomacy and development should continue to inspire future generations.

Mudavadi also extended his condolences to Nabwera’s family, friends and all Kenyans mourning his death, wishing that his soul rest in eternal peace.
Nabwera played a significant role in Kenya’s early diplomatic engagements, serving as the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations from December 1963 to September 1970 before becoming Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States.
He later served as Minister of State in the Office of former President Daniel arap Moi and as Secretary-General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), which governed Kenya for decades before the introduction of multiparty politics.
Nabwera also ventured into elective politics, becoming the first Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency after it was established in 1988. He represented the constituency in the National Assembly.
Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya also mourned the veteran politician, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to Kenya’s governance and national development would remain part of the country’s history.

He added that Nabwera’s contribution to Kenya’s diplomatic relations, governance and national development would remain etched in the country’s history.
Former Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo also expressed sorrow over Nabwera’s death, recalling their interaction when the veteran leader served as a consultant at Nzoia Sugar Company in 2008.
