Woman Who Raped Her 8-year-old Neighbor in KZN Sentenced to 20 years in jail

Three offenders who were convicted in separate rape cases involving women and children have been sentenced to extensive prison terms by the Umzimkhulu Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal, according to the police.

In one of the cases, a 19-year-old woman was convicted of raping her nine-year-old neighbour in the Ibisi area and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police spokesperson, alleged that the teenager summoned the child to her bedroom before instructing her to undress. After that, she used her digits to sexually assault the child.

Tenes Hassan, 33, was also sentenced to six life terms by the court after being convicted of raping six women in Umzimkhulu between January and December 2022. Additionally, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for housebreaking.

Investigators have determined that Hassan targeted residences where women were either alone or with their children. He allegedly gained entry to the properties, demanded valuables, and subsequently sexually assaulted the victims.

DNA evidence was employed by investigators to establish a connection between Hassan and all six rape cases. The evidence was instrumental in establishing the connection between the accused and the distinct incidents that transpired during the 2022 period.

In a third instance, a 45-year-old man was convicted of raping his five-year-old niece in the Gowan Lea policing area on 28 December 2025. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

The South African Police Service expressed its satisfaction with the convictions and commended the detectives from the Kokstad Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for their investigative efforts.

According to the police, the successful prosecutions underscored the significance of conducting comprehensive investigations in cases involving sexual offences, particularly those perpetrated against more vulnerable victims.

The courts have imposed life imprisonment in two of the cases and a lengthy sentence in the third, resulting in significant prison terms for all three offenders.

Also, the authorities have verified that all three convicted offenders will be included in South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders. It is the intention of the register to maintain a record of individuals who have been convicted of sexual offences and to safeguard vulnerable members of society from potential repeat offenders.
