We Will Not Accept Your Apology; How Can You Attack A Decent Leader?- Afia Pokua Speaks
Media personality Afia Pokua has raised alarm over what she sees as the growing tendency to disrespect influential religious and national personalities in Ghana, particularly at a time when political divisions have become increasingly pronounced.
The broadcaster addressed the matter in a Facebook post following a recent clash between Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, and Free Zones Authority CEO Hon. Mary Ewusi.
The controversy arose after Apostle Nyamekye appealed to the government to intensify measures against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. He expressed concern about the extent to which illegal mining has damaged and polluted Ghana’s water resources.
He further explained that the environmental crisis had reached a point where the Church of Pentecost had suspended the practice of baptising converts in rivers and other natural water bodies. The disclosure quickly became a subject of national conversation.
Hon. Mary Ewusi subsequently responded to the church leader’s comments, reportedly suggesting that his position was influenced by political considerations rather than being a straightforward call for action on an environmental issue.
Her response attracted criticism from sections of the public, eventually leading to an apology from the Free Zones Authority boss. However, Afia Pokua believes the apology did not go far enough.
The media personality described the statement as a “conditional” apology and questioned its sincerity. She also condemned what she regarded as an unnecessary public confrontation with Apostle Nyamekye.
“Conditional apology. Unprovoked attack on a decent leader of a church with almost 4 million members,” Afia Pokua stated.
She maintained that the stature of Apostle Nyamekye and the huge membership of the Church of Pentecost made the alleged public attack particularly inappropriate.
Afia Pokua’s intervention has reignited discussions about the relationship between politics, religion and national issues such as galamsey. It has also prompted calls for public officials and other influential figures to engage in national debates with greater restraint, respect and responsibility.
