Vice President Say Government Cannot Pay Teachers Because They’re Too Many,Interesting—PK
Ghanaian commentator P.K. Sarpong has questioned the government’s handling of outstanding payments owed to teachers following reported comments by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang about the delays.
Sarpong took issue with the reported explanation that the large number of teachers makes it difficult for the government to clear the arrears.
He argued that the situation undermines the purpose of professional advancement within the teaching profession.
Writing on Facebook, he questioned the rationale behind teachers spending money on further education and promotion examinations when the financial benefits associated with successful promotions may not be paid promptly.
According to Sarpong, teachers are expected to upgrade their qualifications, pass promotion examinations and accept greater responsibilities.
However, after meeting these requirements, some may still face prolonged delays before receiving the financial benefits attached to their new positions.
He sarcastically suggested that a future promotion examination could even include a question on “how to work hard, get promoted and still wait indefinitely for your money.”
Sarpong further argued that if the number of teachers is a major reason for the payment delays, the government should explain why educators should continue investing in professional development when the financial rewards for their efforts remain uncertain.
He stressed that encouraging teachers to improve their qualifications should go hand in hand with paying the financial benefits associated with their promotions.
For Sarpong, the promotion, new qualifications and additional responsibilities may be recognised, but without the corresponding payments, the benefits of professional advancement remain incomplete.
