Uganda is using the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) in Nairobi to strengthen tourism cooperation with Kenya, promote “Destination Uganda” and create new business opportunities between tourism enterprises in the two countries.
The Ugandan delegation, led by State Minister for Tourism Hon. Suzan Nakawuki, is showcasing the country’s diverse tourism experiences while engaging Kenyan tour operators, travel trade partners and other industry stakeholders.
The expo, officially opened on Wednesday by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, brings together tourism destinations, travel trade players, buyers, businesses and industry stakeholders to establish partnerships and expand tourism opportunities.
Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) Board Chairperson Pearl Kakooza, who is attending the expo, said Uganda’s participation demonstrates the importance the country places on strengthening regional tourism partnerships.
“Our participation at Magical Kenya Travel Expo is about strengthening the relationship between Uganda and Kenya’s tourism sectors, developing joint opportunities and encouraging more visitors to discover the Pearl of Africa,” Kakooza said.
Ahead of the expo, the Ugandan delegation held business-to-business (B2B) engagements with more than 40 Kenyan tour operators and travel trade partners. Ugandan tourism operators are using the meetings to establish new partnerships, develop joint tour packages and create direct business opportunities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Nakawuki invited Kenyan travellers to visit Uganda and experience its diverse tourism offerings.
“We invite our brothers and sisters from Kenya to come and discover the Pearl of Africa, experience our hospitality, explore our attractions and enjoy our vibrant cultural experiences,” Nakawuki said.
She highlighted Uganda’s wildlife, primates, adventure, culture, heritage, culinary tourism, coffee and community-based tourism experiences, as well as cultural events such as the Nyege Nyege Festival.
Nakawuki said Uganda’s tourism offering complements the wider East African experience, adding that stronger collaboration among tourism businesses can increase tourism flows between the two countries.
Uganda’s participation also includes destination presentations aimed at increasing visibility for Destination Uganda in the Kenyan market and positioning the country as a preferred destination for leisure, adventure, cultural and business travellers.
UTB said continued engagement with the Kenyan travel trade is expected to strengthen business linkages, encourage joint tourism products and increase tourist flows between Uganda and Kenya.
The board also emphasised the potential for closer regional cooperation to encourage longer stays and greater visitor spending within East Africa.
The engagements at MKTE form part of Uganda’s broader efforts to position East Africa as a competitive and interconnected tourism destination while creating stronger commercial links between tourism enterprises across the region.
