The crash happened last night in the Capricorn District after a truck transporting passengers and goods reportedly suffered a tyre puncture and overturned, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.

The department said preliminary information indicates that three females, aged between 26 and 35, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

The male driver and three children were injured and transported to hospital for medical treatment.

The overturned truck is causing a major obstruction on the N1.

According to the department, one lane from Mokopane towards Polokwane is currently open to traffic, while two lanes in the north-to-south direction and part of the south-to-north lane remain obstructed.

Traffic officials from the N1 Brigade are on scene conducting point duty and managing the flow of traffic.

Motorists have been warned that further delays are expected while a heavy-duty recovery vehicle works to remove the overturned truck.

The department said the preliminary investigation points to a possible tyre puncture as the cause of the crash, while overloading is also being investigated as a possible contributing factor.

Motorists travelling between Mokopane and Polokwane are being advised to use the R101 to avoid the affected section of the N1.

Those travelling from Polokwane towards the south and Mokopane can also use the R101 before rejoining the N1 in Mokopane.

The department urged motorists approaching the crash scene to reduce their speed, exercise extreme caution and follow instructions from traffic officials.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said: “Road Safety is a shared responsibility.”
