The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, following the release of the final inflation data needed to calculate the increase.

That number matters because it determines how much monthly Social Security benefits will increase next year.

The adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W. The SSA compares the average CPI-W reading from the third quarter of the current year with the same period from the last year in which a COLA took effect.

If there is an increase, it’s rounded to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.

Recent forecasts suggest the 2027 COLA could land in the mid-3% range.

The Senior Citizens League has projected a 3.6% increase, which would translate to about $69.75 more per month for the average beneficiary if that estimate holds.

Independent Social Security and Medicare analyst Mary Johnson has offered a slightly lower projection of 3.4%. Those estimates have moved around during the year as inflation changed direction.

“One of the biggest challenges this year has been the sharp swings in inflation,” TSCL executive director Shannon Benton said. “It started at 2.2% in January, climbed to 4.4% in May, then fell to 3.5% in June.”

She added: “Fortunately, our model is designed not to overreact to these swings, keeping our COLA projections relatively steady.”

Earlier projections had climbed as high as 3.8%.

The COLA is based specifically on July, August and September CPI-W data, which makes the final monthly reading especially important. A stronger September inflation figure could push the final adjustment slightly higher, while a softer number could pull it lower.

That makes October 14 the key date for beneficiaries. The broader economic picture remains mixed. Job growth has slowed, unemployment has ticked higher and inflation is still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

Higher energy costs and persistent consumer prices have continued to pressure household budgets, particularly for retirees who depend heavily on fixed income.

The October announcement is also expected to include several other program changes for 2027. Those can include updated earnings limits, taxable wage thresholds and other figures affecting workers and beneficiaries.

That means the announcement isn’t just about how much checks will rise. It will also provide a clearer picture of how Social Security rules will change for people still working, those already receiving benefits and those preparing to retire.

The headline figure will remain the COLA. Based on current estimates, beneficiaries should expect something around 3.4% to 3.6%, with the official number arriving on October 14.
