‘Skeem Saam’ Replaces Macks Papo With Veteran Actor Josias Moleele

Fans of the popular South African soapie Skeem Saam were left surprised this week after actor Macks Papo Senatla was replaced as Marothi Maphuthuma.

According to entertainment reports, Papo will no longer portray the popular character due to personal reasons and his availability for filming. His replacement has already been announced, with veteran actor Josias Moleele stepping into the role.

Papo became a familiar face to Skeem Saam viewers through his portrayal of Marothi Maphuthuma. His return to the soapie previously generated excitement among fans, particularly when his character returned alongside his on-screen wife, Lesego Marakalla, who plays Rachel Kunutu.

The actor also made headlines on social media on another occasion after viewers debated his distinctive fashion choices, including one of his suits.

Entertainment commentator Jabu McDonald confirmed on X on Thursday, 8 October, that Papo’s role had been recast.

“Macks Senatla Saga Papo’s role was recast on Skeem Saam due to personal reasons and his availability for filming,” McDonald reportedly said.

The decision means viewers will soon see a different actor bringing the character of Marothi Maphuthuma to life.

Legendary actor Josias Moleele has been chosen to take over the role. Moleele is expected to make his debut as Marothi on Skeem Saam on 15 October 2026.

The production team also acknowledged Papo’s contribution to the long-running soapie.

The show’s PR manager, Yvonne Siphuka, praised the actor for the impact he had on the character and its audience.

“Macks has made a meaningful contribution to Skeem Saam over the years. His portrayal of Marothi resonated deeply with viewers, and we are grateful for the distinct personality and presence he brought to the character,” she said.

The news has sparked mixed reactions from Skeem Saam viewers, with some fans struggling to imagine another actor playing Marothi.

Several viewers took to social media to express their disappointment over Papo’s departure and argue that certain characters become closely associated with the actors who portray them.

One viewer, @khani_hlahla, wrote that some characters should simply be left alone, while another, @Melo_Malebo, said Papo had “owned” the Marothi role and made it his own.

With Moleele set to make his debut on 15 October, viewers will now be watching closely to see how the veteran actor puts his own interpretation on the much-loved character.
