The court admitted appeals challenging the September 23, 2026 decision of the NEPRA Appellate Tribunal in Islamabad and issued notices to NEPRA and other parties for October 15.
The Sindh High Court adjourned further hearing of the case until October 15.
During the hearing, the counsel said NEPRA has the power to review its decision but cannot determine the tariff afresh.
The lawyer argued that NEPRA had used its suo motu powers to make changes to the tariff, which was unlawful.
According to the details presented in court, the supply tariff was determined on May 27, 2025, while the generation tariff was determined on October 22, 2024.
The distribution and transmission tariff was determined on May 23, 2025.
The counsel said K-Electric’s tariff is determined by NEPRA and is reviewed after every seven years.
Earlier, The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) increased the electricity tariff by Rs1.11 per unit for one month under the August fuel price adjustment.
According to a notification issued by NEPRA, the additional amount will be recovered from consumers across the country, including Karachi, through their October electricity bills.
Sources said the August fuel price adjustment would impose an additional burden of Rs19 billion on electricity consumers.
The increase will not apply to lifeline consumers.
