“Raila Won With 53.6% In 2022 Elections” Matiangi Reveals What Happened

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sparked new discussion regarding Kenya’s contentious 2022 presidential election by asserting that the Azimio la Umoja coalition received data indicating Raila Odinga garnered 53.6 percent of the vote.

Matiang’i shared this assertion during an interview with Msenangu FM on October 6, 2026, while reflecting on the election’s circumstances. He stated that information communicated to the Azimio bloc post-voting suggested that Odinga had surpassed the critical 50 percent mark needed to win the presidency. 

According to Matiang’i, these figures were derived from agencies and monitoring information that the coalition had previously relied on during elections. He noted that exit polls and similar assessments often yielded results closely aligning with the final outcomes, based on his experience.

As a result, Matiang’i explained that the Azimio team anticipated an official announcement declaring Odinga as the winner.

His statements contradict the official results: the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared William Ruto the victor with 50.49 percent of the vote, while Odinga received 48.85 percent. Odinga contested the outcome at the Supreme Court, which ultimately upheld Ruto’s victory.

Matiang’i also revisited the controversy within the IEBC during the final phase of result announcements, where four of the seven commissioners publicly distanced themselves from Chebukati’s declaration, while the remaining three supported it.

Notably, Matiang’i’s 53.6 percent figure reflects information he claims was available to the Azimio camp at the time, rather than a revised official election result. Independent fact-checking has also established that some alternate tallies circulated post-election were either false or unverified.

Additionally, Matiang’i suggested that some details from his time in government are classified under the Official Secrets Act, implying that he cannot publicly disclose all the information he possesses regarding the election.
