Prepare for Rainfall as KMD Issues 24-Hour Forecast Affecting the Following Parts of the Country
Kenyans in several parts of the country have been warned to prepare for rainfall and changing weather conditions as the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) issues a fresh 24-hour forecast, with strong winds of more than 25 knots also expected in parts of northern Kenya.
The forecast is valid from 9pm on Thursday, October 8, to 9pm on Friday, October 9, 2026. KMD has identified several counties likely to experience rainfall during the period, while Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit face a separate warning over strong southerly to southeasterly winds.
Morning rains accompanied by afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley.
The affected areas include West Pokot, Siaya, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bungoma, Kakamega, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kericho, Kisii, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.
Residents in these areas should remain alert to changing conditions, particularly during the afternoon when showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop. Wet roads and reduced visibility may also affect motorists in areas receiving rainfall.
Cold and cloudy conditions with morning rains giving rise to sunny intervals are expected over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County.
The areas expected to receive rainfall include Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga and Tharaka-Nithi counties.
Along the Coast, rainfall is expected over Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu counties. The coastal areas could experience showers at different times within the forecast period, with residents advised to monitor local weather developments.
In northern Kenya, rainfall is expected over Mandera, Wajir and Marsabit counties. Marsabit stands out in the forecast as it faces both the possibility of rainfall and strong winds.
KMD has warned that strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to 12.5 metres per second, are expected over parts of Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit counties.
The winds could create difficult conditions for outdoor activities and other weather-sensitive operations.
The forecast comes as the October to December Short Rains season continues across the country. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and keep up with subsequent KMD updates as weather conditions evolve during the 24-hour period.
