Phakela Issues New Serious Warnings to Nigerian and Somali Foreigners in SA
Phakelumthakathi, a South African anti-immigration activist, has incited new controversy by making inflammatory statements that target Nigerian and Somali immigrants who reside in the country.
He suggested that these groups should direct their harmful conduct toward the area near EFF leader Julius Malema’s home, according to statements that have since been widely disseminated online. This comment is a pointed jab at Malema, who has long advocated for African unity and has consistently spoken out against xenophobia and discrimination against immigrants.
Phakelumthakathi went further, making serious allegations that some Somali and Nigerian immigrants were engaging in relationships with underage girls, some of whom were reportedly as young as 15, and pressuring them to undergo abortions. It is crucial to emphasise that these assertions are unverified accusations rather than established fact, as no evidence has been presented to substantiate them.
The comments are made at a time when immigration is still a highly sensitive issue in South Africa. Unemployment, crime, and undocumented migration have been the subject of ongoing frustration in certain communities, which has occasionally escalated into animosity toward foreign nationals. Rights groups and political leaders have consistently cautioned against attributing broader social and economic issues to entire immigrant communities, citing the potential for xenophobia and, in certain instances, violence. This type of hostility has been experienced by Nigerian, Somali, and other African immigrant communities in the past, notably during periods of increased anti-immigrant sentiment. Occasionally, this hostility has manifested itself in attacks on foreign-owned businesses.
Malema, on the other hand, has consistently advocated for a distinct perspective, contending that African nations should unite rather than remain divided along colonial-era borders. He also maintains that immigrants from other regions of the continent should be regarded with respect. This posture places him in opposition to activists such as Phakelumthakathi, who persist in advocating for more stringent immigration enforcement.
The recent comments of Phakelumthakathi are expected to exacerbate the already tense national discourse, which is characterised by tensions regarding migration, crime, and xenophobia. This discourse underscores the necessity of distinguishing between specific, evidence-based accusations against individuals and broad generalisations about entire nationalities or immigrant groups.
