Oburu Is ‘Dead’ Rumours Take New Twist as Senior Gvnt Official Issues Update After Hospital Visit

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has visited hospitalised Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga in Nairobi, providing an update on the Siaya senator’s recovery after he missed the dedication ceremony of his late brother Raila Odinga’s mausoleum in Bondo.

Mudavadi visited Oburu shortly after attending the handover and dedication of Raila’s mausoleum at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Siaya County, where President William Ruto formally handed over the facility to the Odinga family.

According to the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Mudavadi was pleased to find Oburu making good progress in his recovery. The senior government official also briefed the senator on the ceremony, which brought together national leaders, members of the Odinga family and residents to honour Raila’s life and political legacy.

The visit comes amid public speculation about Oburu’s health after his absence from the high-profile event attracted attention. As the ODM party leader and head of the Odinga family following Raila’s death, his absence had raised questions among supporters who expected him to attend the ceremony.

Oburu, however, sent a message that was read by his eldest son, Jaoko Oburu, during the gathering. In the message, the senator apologised for missing the event, explaining that he was following his doctors’ instructions to rest and limit physical engagements.

He also indicated that his condition had improved significantly, reassuring those attending that he remained emotionally connected to the occasion despite being unable to participate in person.

President Ruto had earlier addressed concerns about Oburu’s absence, telling residents in Bondo that the senator was dealing with a medical matter and sending greetings on his behalf.

During his hospital visit, Mudavadi conveyed his message about the mausoleum ceremony and expressed satisfaction with Oburu’s progress. The update offered reassurance amid growing public interest in the ODM leader’s condition.

Oburu’s absence from the ceremony had fuelled speculation on social media, but the information released by Mudavadi’s office indicated that the senator was recovering under medical supervision. No official statement in the report confirmed the death rumours circulating online.
