Mbule Reveals Why He Turned Down Kaizer Chiefs for Orlando Pirates
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Mbule has disclosed that Kaizer Chiefs were among the clubs interested in signing him after his contract with the reigning South African giants expired. Despite receiving an approach from the Soweto club, Mbule eventually decided to pursue a different opportunity and joined Orlando Pirates.
Mbule became available after his spell with Sundowns came to an end, attracting attention from several clubs looking to strengthen their squads. The midfielder confirmed that Chiefs were one of the teams that made contact with him during his search for a new club.
Reflecting on the period following his departure from Sundowns, Mbule explained that he had several options before deciding where to continue his career.
“Firstly, my contract with Sundowns ended. There’s other teams also that wanted to sign me. Even Chiefs approached me…”
The revelation is particularly notable because of the intense rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Both clubs are among the biggest names in South African football, and players who move between the two sides often face considerable attention from supporters and the media.
Mbule ultimately chose Pirates, making his decision an interesting development in the ongoing competition between the Soweto giants. His move also marked another stage in a career that was once viewed as highly promising.
The midfielder initially made his name at SuperSport United before securing a move to Sundowns. At the Brazilians, however, competition for places and difficulties with consistency affected his ability to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
Chiefs would potentially have benefited from Mbule’s technical ability, creativity and physical presence in midfield. Instead, Pirates secured his services as he seeks to regain his confidence and reproduce the performances that previously earned him recognition as one of the country’s talented midfielders.
His revelation provides insight into the decisions players face during transfer periods, particularly when they have offers from clubs with different ambitions and expectations.
Although Mbule has now moved forward with his career at Pirates, his admission confirms that Chiefs had an opportunity to sign him. The decision adds another fascinating element to the rivalry between the two Soweto clubs and could remain a talking point among supporters as Mbule attempts to make his mark at Orlando Pirates.
