Mahama calls out Agyeman Manu, Oko Boye, Nsiah-Asare
President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about the unfinished Agenda 111 hospital project, attributing its failure to the actions of Dr. Bernard Oko Boye, Kweku Agyeman Manu and Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare.
During his State of the Nation Address, Mahama claimed that close to $400 million had been spent on the initiative without any of the hospitals becoming operational. He questioned the outcome of the project given the amount of public funds reportedly invested in it.
Mahama said improved financial management could have made it possible to complete at least 22 of the planned hospitals.
He also rejected suggestions that the facilities were almost ready, arguing that they remained incomplete and unable to provide healthcare services.
Agenda 111 was launched by the Nana Akufo-Addo administration as a major healthcare infrastructure programme designed to improve access to medical services throughout Ghana. Mahama’s criticism has renewed questions about the project’s implementation and use of public funds.
The former president also addressed Ghana’s financial challenges, claiming that the Sinking Fund had a balance of just $64,000 and GH₵143,000.
He said the country was facing about GH₵280 billion in debt repayments over a four-year period, consisting of GH₵150 billion in domestic obligations and GH₵130 billion in external debt.
He further cited the financial difficulties of state-owned enterprises, claiming that ECG had liabilities of GH₵68 billion, while COCOBOD owed GH₵32.5 billion.
Mahama nevertheless outlined plans to improve the country’s economic position. These include organising a National Economic Dialogue and presenting a comprehensive national budget aimed at strengthening fiscal management.
He said addressing Ghana’s economic difficulties would require transparency, accountability and disciplined leadership.
Mahama also referred to his previous experience dealing with an energy crisis, saying his administration would adopt a long-term approach to resolving the country’s economic challenges.
