Police in Kassanda District have arrested a school canteen attendant after a student died following an alleged confrontation in which a stone was thrown at him.
The suspect, identified as Resty Namutebi, works as a canteen attendant at Bright Way Secondary School in Kyamasansa Village, Kassanda Sub-county.
The deceased, Ronald Ssemiyingo, 20, was a Senior Three student at the school.
According to police, the incident happened at about 7am on Monday when Namutebi allegedly confronted Ssemiyingo.
Police said Namutebi picked up a stone and threw it at the student but missed her intended target. The stone allegedly struck Ssemiyingo on the head, seriously injuring him.
The student was given first aid at the school before being taken to Red Rose Hospital for further treatment, but police said he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident was reported at Kassanda Police Station at about 1:30pm on Wednesday by Emmanuel Luyima.
Following the report, a homicide team from Kassanda District visited the scene and began investigations. Police said statements have also been recorded from witnesses.
Namutebi was arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said detectives were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the exact cause of the student’s death.
Police said the investigation would also establish what transpired between the canteen attendant and the student before the stone was thrown.
