Kalonzo’s Ukombozi Alliance Left Out as Gachagua Picks Sifuna’s TEP for 2027 Coalition

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp has signalled a new direction in the opposition coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election, with his party holding talks with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s newly adopted political vehicle, The Equitable Party (TEP).

The development places Sifuna’s party at the centre of fresh efforts to unite opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, while Gachagua’s camp has stayed away from Kalonzo Musyoka’s Ukombozi Alliance.

Gachagua has publicly backed Sifuna’s political project following the senator’s unveiling of TEP as his vehicle for the presidential race.

In a message congratulating Sifuna, Gachagua urged his supporters to join the new party and back its candidates in the 2027 elections.

The former Deputy President further encouraged Sifuna to move quickly in building the party and preparing candidates for the upcoming elections.

The latest development comes as opposition leaders intensify negotiations over how to present a single candidate against President William Ruto in 2027.

Gachagua’s support for TEP comes as Kalonzo Musyoka leads the newly unveiled Ukombozi Alliance, another opposition formation seeking to consolidate support ahead of 2027.

The former Deputy President’s camp has not joined Ukombozi Alliance, instead opening discussions around a possible political arrangement with Sifuna’s TEP.

Sifuna has built significant political momentum through the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which has attracted a youthful following and provided a platform for his presidential ambitions.

With TEP now serving as his formal political vehicle, Sifuna could have greater room to negotiate issues including the opposition presidential ticket, parliamentary nominations and the sharing of political responsibilities within a possible coalition.
