Ghana Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Highway Robbery On Kumasi-Accra Road After Special Operation

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspected armed robbers who have been terrorizing motorists on the Kumasi-Accra highway particularly around Konongo, Nkawkaw and Suhum stretch for the past two months leading to several robbery incidents and loss of valuables.

According to a report by Ghana News Agency published on October 7 2026 at 7:15 am, the suspects were arrested on October 6 2026 during a special intelligence led operation conducted by the Ashanti Regional Police Command and Eastern Regional Police Command. Ghana Broadcasting Corporation also reported the arrest on October 7 2026 at 8:00 am saying the operation was carried out around 2:00 am at a hideout near Anyinam in the Eastern Region where the suspects were hiding after robbing a Sprinter bus on October 5 2026.

JoyNews in its report on October 7 2026 at 9:10 am said Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe at a press briefing in Kumasi said the suspects have been identified as Kwame Asare alias Alhaji 32 years, Kofi Boakye 28 years and Yaw Mensah 25 years. He said police retrieved from them two pump action guns, one AK 47 rifle, 45 rounds of ammunition, three machetes and several mobile phones believed to belong to victims. He said the gang has been on police wanted list since August 2026 for involvement in over 10 robbery cases.

Citi Newsroom noted on October 7 2026 at 10:30 am that several drivers and passengers who ply Kumasi-Accra road have complained of increasing armed robbery attacks especially during night hours. Some drivers said they now fear to travel at night and have to park at filling stations until daybreak. Ghana Private Road Transport Union GPRTU Ashanti Regional branch said they reported the matter to police several times and are happy arrests have been made to bring relief to commuters.

Adomonline.com reported on October 7 2026 at 11:15 am that one of the victims Maame Ama Konadu who was robbed on September 28 2026 near Nkawkaw said robbers blocked road with logs and attacked passengers on board a VIP bus from Kumasi to Accra taking away cash, laptops and jewellery worth thousands of cedis. She said she is happy police have arrested them and called for swift prosecution to serve as deterrent to others.

GhanaWeb in its report on October 7 2026 at 12:00 pm said the Inspector General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare has commended the Ashanti and Eastern Regional Police Commands for successful operation and assured public of police commitment to ensure safety on all major highways across country. He said police will intensify highway patrols with introduction of special highway patrol teams equipped with armoured vehicles and body cameras to monitor all major roads especially during festive season.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations and will be arraigned before court on October 8 2026. Police said they are on manhunt for two other accomplices who managed to escape during operation and urged public to volunteer information to help arrest them.
