Fuliza M-PESA: How to Qualify, Get a Limit and Use the Service

Fuliza M-PESA is an overdraft service offered by Safaricom that enables M-PESA customers to complete transactions even when they do not have enough money in their accounts. The service allows eligible customers to access additional funds within an assigned limit and use them for transactions such as sending money, paying for goods and services, settling bills and purchasing airtime.

To use Fuliza, customers must have an active Safaricom line registered on M-PESA and opt into the service. Safaricom allows customers registered using a Kenyan National ID, Kenyan passport or Military ID to apply. However, customers registered with a foreign passport cannot activate Fuliza. Opting into the service also does not automatically guarantee that a customer will receive an overdraft limit.

Customers can activate Fuliza directly from their phones by dialling *334#. They should select “Loans and Savings,” choose “Fuliza” and follow the instructions provided to complete the opt-in process.

The amount a customer can access through Fuliza depends on factors linked to their Safaricom and M-PESA usage. Safaricom generally requires customers to have used its network for at least six months before they can receive a Fuliza limit. Those who have been on the network for less than six months may initially receive a zero limit.

The assigned limit is not necessarily permanent and can change over time. Regular use of Safaricom and M-PESA services, combined with timely repayment of Fuliza obligations, may contribute to an increase in the available limit.

Fuliza can be used to send money to registered and unregistered M-PESA users, pay for goods through Lipa na M-PESA, settle bills and purchase airtime for oneself or another person. Customers can also continue using the service repeatedly provided each transaction falls within their available limit.

Safaricom may periodically review customers’ limits based on their usage and repayment behaviour, meaning the amount available can increase, decrease or remain unchanged over time.
