“Elon Musk Is Not Uhuru, He’ll Peel You, Wash You & Expose You to the World” ODM MP Warns Ruto.

The government has issued new guidelines targeting social media businesses operating in Kenya in response to persistent complaints from high-ranking government officials regarding the misuse of social media, especially among young Kenyans.

In order to maintain accountability for their operations and usage, social media companies will need to set up real offices in Kenya in accordance with these regulations.

The Ministry of Interior declared, “All social media entities operating in Kenya must establish a physical presence within our jurisdiction in order to address the growing issues of disinformation, social media manipulation, and online abuse.”

Global tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, which runs Facebook (with 3.07 billion users worldwide) and Instagram (with 2.4 billion users), as well as Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), which has 600 million users worldwide and is owned by the richest man in the world, are the main targets of the directive. Additionally, TikTok and other services must conform.

The declaration comes after a meeting between social media networks, telecommunications firms, and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo. According to the Interior Ministry, the move was motivated by the increasing abuse of social media by certain Kenyans.

The administration has been accused of trying to restrict social media freedom of expression, therefore the action is likely to be criticised by the public and civil society organisations.

Caleb Amisi, a member of parliament from Saboti, also voiced his opinion, cautioning President Ruto to handle the matter carefully.

“@elonmusk is not Uhuru, my dear brother Ruto. You will be peeled off, cleaned, minced, fried, and fed to vultures all over the world by this one! “Let’s tackle cybercrime with intelligence, not strength,” he said.
