Chennai Corporation Installs High-Capacity Pumps at 45 Flood-Prone Areas
CHENNAI: Ahead of the Northeast Monsoon, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has installed 100-HP high-capacity motor pumps at 45 locations identified as highly vulnerable to flooding, Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said on Wednesday.
The civic body has kept 150 high-capacity 100-HP pumps and 500 tractor-operated motor pumps ready. Another 670 electric and diesel-powered pumps of various capacities are also available, he said.
The 100-HP pumps have been installed at the first 45 priority locations and will be used to drain floodwater. The Corporation plans to install 70 per cent of the pumps by October 15.
The Corporation has allocated Rs 100 crore for desilting drains, removing water hyacinth from water bodies, road maintenance, preparing relief camps and community kitchens.
Vehicles and machinery earmarked for monsoon-related operations have also been tested twice across all 15 zones, on a ward-wise basis, to ensure they are ready for deployment during heavy rains.
