Bodyguard’s Tender Moment With Chivayo’s Daughter Touches Hearts at Burial

Amid the grief at Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare on October 8, a quiet exchange between a little girl and a family bodyguard moved many people online.

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were laid to rest at the hilltop cemetery that afternoon.

As mourners gathered and the final rites went on, photographs began to circulate of Atarah Chivayo, the couple’s young daughter, sharing a gentle moment with one of the family’s guards. She was seated in a parked car when she leaned out of the window to speak with the heavily built man standing beside it.

He did not stay stiff or watchful. Instead, he gave her his full attention. When she reached out to hug him, he held her warmly while her father was being buried nearby.

Other pictures showed him kneeling beside her under the tent where mourners were seated. The ease between them suggested a bond that had formed long before that sad afternoon.

The images spread quickly, and many people praised the guard for his kindness. Gugu Nyandoro commented that Atarah has a lot of love to give and called the man a loyal bodyguard.

Precious Mariranyika observed that children her age may not fully understand what is happening until people have left and they begin asking where their father is. Runyararo Nyandoro agreed, saying the observation was correct and sad.

Earlier, footage from the family home showed Atarah in tears beside her father’s flag-draped casket, while her brother John was also inconsolable. Those scenes drew wide sympathy from the public.

For many who saw the photographs, the moment was a reminder that in the middle of loss, small acts of human warmth can leave the deepest mark.

A child who had lost so much found comfort in a familiar and trusted presence, and that simple gesture is what people will remember.
