Top University Orders Students to Leave the Institution Premises This Morning
A third-year student’s reported death in a night attack has plunged Kibabii University into turmoil, forcing management to close the institution and send all learners home.
The student was reportedly attacked alongside others by unknown assailants on Monday night, October 6.
He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Bungoma, where he was pronounced dead.
Three other students were also injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Anger spilled onto the streets on Tuesday as students protested over their safety and demanded action over their colleague’s killing.
The demonstrations reportedly turned chaotic, with students clashing with police officers who moved in to contain the unrest.
At one point, the protesters allegedly tried to retrieve their colleague’s body from a hospital in Bungoma, heightening tensions.
Roads around the institution were blocked, bringing transport and business activities to a standstill.
The university Senate met in a special session on Tuesday and resolved to suspend teaching and learning for the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year with immediate effect.
An internal memo from Registrar of Academic Affairs Jacklyne Okello Alari directed all students to leave the premises by 3pm.
“All students should vacate the university premises with immediate effect, latest 3:00 pm,” the memo read.
Those in hostels were given the same deadline, while students renting off campus were advised to find alternative accommodation until classes resume.
No reopening date has been announced, meaning learners will stay away until the university communicates further.
The closure comes as public universities across Kenya grapple with a nationwide lecturers’ strike.
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) began the industrial action on Friday, October 2, after talks on the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement collapsed.
