A semi-truck crash caused significant traffic delays on Erie’s west side Wednesday morning after the vehicle struck a railroad bridge at a location known for similar accidents.

The crash happened at the intersection of 14th and Liberty streets, where the truck attempted to pass beneath the low-clearance bridge but did not have enough clearance to make it through.

The impact caused extensive damage to the tractor-trailer, ripping off much of the top portion of the trailer. The truck was carrying pallets of Busch Light beer at the time of the crash. It remains unclear whether any of the cargo was damaged.

Despite the severity of the damage to the vehicle, the driver was not injured.

Erie Police closed the roadway for several hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage and assess the scene. Traffic was diverted around the area until the truck could be removed and the roadway reopened.

The bridge at 14th and Liberty streets has been the site of multiple similar crashes over the years.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the incident.
