Punjab reimposes Section 144 across province until Oct 15 amid terror threat

LAHORE  –  The Punjab government has reimposed Section 144 across the province until October 15, banning public gatherings, rallies, processions and assemblies of five or more people amid security alerts over possible terrorist attacks on public gatherings. According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the restrictions cover assemblies, processions and gatherings at public places, roads and open spaces. The carrying and display of all types of weapons at public places has also been prohibited. The notification also bans any act of inciting or encouraging people to participate in unlawful assemblies. The Home Department said the restrictions had been imposed following alerts received by law enforcement and intelligence agencies about imminent security threats. Intelligence reports indicated that terrorist organisations were planning to target public gatherings, making rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and demonstrations potential targets, it said. Law enforcement agencies had requested immediate preventive measures to counter the potential threat and ensure the maintenance of law and order. The restrictions have been imposed under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, with immediate effect and will remain in force across Punjab until October 15. However, the ban does not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers and burials, or activities at mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government institutions and duly authorised events have also been exempted. Personnel of law enforcement, intelligence and security agencies will likewise remain exempt from the restrictions while performing their official duties. A Punjab Home Department spokesperson said the restrictions were aimed at protecting the lives and property of citizens, describing public safety as the government’s foremost priority.
