NSMQ Contestant Edward Anato Dies in Car Accident

Ghana’s academic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Edward Anato, a brilliant National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) contestant from Presbyterian Senior High School, Bompata, in the Ashanti Region.

Edward reportedly passed away following a car accident. The exact location and circumstances surrounding the crash had not been confirmed at the time of the announcement.

The young academic gained recognition through his participation in the 2026 edition of the NSMQ, where he represented Presbyterian SHS, Bompata. He was part of the team that made history by guiding the school to the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition for the first time.

His performance in the contest earned him admiration from students, teachers and supporters of the school, with many viewing him as a promising young talent with a bright academic future.

Beyond his NSMQ achievement, Edward had also secured admission to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where he was expected to pursue a degree in Computer Science. He was scheduled to report to the university on October 13, 2026, to begin his tertiary education.

His death, coming just days before he was expected to commence university, has therefore been met with shock and sadness by those who knew him and followed his academic journey.

The NSMQ organisers confirmed his death on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, expressing sorrow over the loss of the young contestant.

News of his passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences, particularly among members of the NSMQ community, former contestants, educators and students who had followed his journey during the 2026 competition.

Edward’s death has cut short what many considered a promising academic journey, leaving his family, school community and friends to mourn the loss of a young student with significant potential.
