Kalonzo Finally Speaks on Working With Ruto After His Meeting With UDA Official

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reaffirmed his commitment to opposition politics amid renewed speculation over his political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The speculation followed a private meeting between Kalonzo and former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman Johnson Muthama on Thursday evening, October 1. The meeting sparked questions within political circles over whether the two politicians had discussed a possible political arrangement involving President William Ruto and his administration.

Muthama, however, described the encounter as a consultation on national issues affecting Kenyans. He did not indicate that the meeting had resulted in any political agreement or commitment involving Kalonzo and the government.

Wiper chairman Jamleck Kamau has also dismissed suggestions that Kalonzo could back Ruto’s re-election bid or enter into a political arrangement with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Kamau maintained that Wiper remains focused on working with other opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify.

Kalonzo has also sought to clarify remarks in which he referred to Ruto as his “brother”. The comments had fueled speculation that the Wiper leader could be softening his position toward the President. On September 30, Kalonzo explained that his description was rooted in his Christian belief that Kenyans should view one another as brothers, insisting that it was not an endorsement of Ruto or his administration.

The former Vice President reiterated his opposition stance on Saturday while attending the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of former Justice Minister Martha Karua, in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.

The ceremony brought together several prominent opposition figures, including retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.

Kalonzo used the occasion to caution opposition politicians against becoming political “moles” for the government. He urged opposition leaders to remain united and focused as they prepare for the 2027 election.

For now, there is no public evidence that Kalonzo’s meeting with Muthama resulted in a political agreement with Ruto’s camp. Wiper continues to maintain that it will cooperate with like-minded opposition parties ahead of the August 2027 General Election.
