I’m No Longer NPP—Now I Strongly Support President Mahama’s Third-Term Agenda – Omanhene Vows
Veteran broadcaster Omanhene Kwabena Asante has expressed support for the idea of President John Dramani Mahama potentially serving a third term if Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential tenure are changed.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, Omanhene indicated that he would not oppose another presidential bid by Mahama if the constitutional framework were amended to permit it. He suggested that the decision should ultimately be left to Ghanaians through the appropriate constitutional process.
His comments have renewed discussion about Ghana’s presidential term limits and the possibility of amending the existing provisions. Under the 1992 Constitution, a person elected President may serve a maximum of two terms. Any attempt to alter that arrangement would therefore require constitutional procedures rather than a simple political declaration.
Omanhene’s position also comes amid wider political discussions about Mahama’s administration and the direction of the country. He pointed to the value of governing experience and suggested that a leader who has previously occupied the presidency could draw on that experience in addressing challenges such as unemployment, economic pressures and governance.
The proposal, however, remains politically and constitutionally contentious. Critics of a possible third term argue that term limits serve as an important safeguard against prolonged political power and help strengthen democratic institutions.
Others who support reconsidering the restriction argue that voters should have the freedom to retain a leader if they remain satisfied with the person’s performance and leadership.
There has been no indication in the material available that President Mahama himself has formally announced plans to seek a third term. Any such possibility would depend first on a lawful amendment of the constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure.
Omanhene’s comments have therefore added to an increasingly visible public conversation about constitutional reform, presidential term limits and the future of Ghana’s political system. The debate is likely to continue as political actors and citizens weigh the implications of any proposed change.
