“Don’t Tape or Glue Torn Cedi Notes Again” – Bank of Ghana Issues Strong Warning to Ghanaians

The Bank of Ghana has cautioned the public against mutilating and improperly repairing Ghana Cedi banknotes. The warning was issued in a press release dated 7 October 2026.

The central bank said its attention had been drawn to a video circulating on social media. The video shows individuals repairing torn and soiled banknotes with adhesive tape. These individuals then re-issue the notes as a business activity.

The Bank of Ghana described the practice as harmful. It stated that the Ghana Cedi is legal tender and an important national symbol. No person should repair, re-join or alter mutilated banknotes for re-issue or recirculation. According to the bank, such acts undermine the integrity of the currency. They may also affect its acceptability and proper processing within the cash cycle.

The bank further explained that notes which have been taped, glued, stapled or otherwise improperly repaired are unfit for circulation. Such notes can damage ATMs and currency processing machines. They may also be rejected when presented for payment or exchange. This could cause financial loss to members of the public.

The Bank of Ghana reminded Ghanaians that it holds the sole mandate for managing the country’s currency. It advised the public to take all mutilated or damaged banknotes to a commercial bank. The bank will examine the notes and replace them in line with the central bank’s laid-down procedures. When a mutilated note is presented for examination, more than half of the original banknote must be provided.

The public was given two clear instructions. First, people should not tape, glue, staple or re-join damaged notes. Second, they should take such notes to a commercial bank for examination and replacement.

Finally, the Bank of Ghana urged citizens to handle banknotes with care. It also asked them to report anyone involved in improper repair or mutilation of notes to the bank or to law enforcement authorities.

The press release closed with a simple message: respect the Cedi, because it is our national pride.
